Abstrakt
The essays in this volume chronicle Schoenberg's career over a span of
some forty-two years. His musical evelopment, especially during the period
from the end of the first decade of the twentieth century until the early
1930s, was remarkable. Schoenberg's career is also shown from the perspective
of its three main geographical settings: Austria, the Weimar Republic,
and America. This volume thus divides naturally into three discrete units
according to the different sociopolitical settings in which its protagonist
worked. Musical techniques and biographical issues are integral to the
subject. Nevertheless, the book's main focus is the specific political
and religious material that Schoenberg sought to express in music.
