Dent wurde am 16. Juli 1876 in Ribston, York geboren. Nach der Schulzeit in Eton besuchte er Vorlesungen für Musikgeschichte am King's College, Cambridge, zusätzlich Kurse in Harmonielehre und Kontrapunkt. 1918 wurde er Musikkritiker in London, bald kehrte er nach Cambridge als Musikprofessor zurück. In die Zeit seiner Tätigkeit fällt die Reorganisation der musikalischen Ausbildung, zudem setzte sich Dent für weniger bekanntes Repertoire ein. Edward Dent war der erste Präsident der IGNM von 1922/23 – 1938 und von 1945 – 1947. Er starb am 22. August 1957 in London. | ||
