Nikos Skalkottas 1904 – 1949 |
Der Lebensweg des 1904 auf der griechischen Insel Euboea geborenen Komponisten Nikos Skalkottas schien anfangs durchaus in gewöhnlichen Bahnen zu verlaufen. Er wuchs in einem stark musikalisch geprägten Elternhaus auf, in dem sich seine musikalischen Fähigkeiten bereits früh entwickeln konnten. | |
| Sein Violinstudium am Athener Konservatorium schloß er 1920 mit dem Gewinn einer Goldmedaille ab. Ein Jahr später reiste er nach Berlin, um Unterricht bei Willy Hess zu nehmen. Trotz der außergewöhnlichen Virtuosität, die er bald erlangte, beschloß er 1925, diese Karriere aufzugeben, um sich ausschließlich dem Komponieren widmen zu können. Als Lehrer wählte er auf Anraten von Freunden Arnold Schönberg, bei dem er bis zu dessen Emigration 1933 bleiben sollte. Schönberg war stets voll des Lobes für seinen Schüler: viel später, in seinem Buch »Style and Idea« (1950) bezeichnet er Skalkottas als einen der wenigen, die es wirklich geschafft haben, Komponist zu werden. Bald nach Schönbergs Weggang aus Berlin kehrte Skalkottas nach Athen zurück, wo er die übrigen Jahre seines Lebens verbrachte. Dabei befand er sich in fast völliger Isolation, gleichermaßen von zeitgenössischen kompositorischen Strömungen wie auch von der Öffentlichkeit, die sein musikalisches Werk gänzlich unbeachtet ließ. Erst nach seinem Tod (1949) wurde sein immenses Œuvre, das beinahe alle musikalischen Gattungen umfaßt, nach und nach gesichtet und aufgearbeitet. | ||||
