Vienna, Third District, Schwarzenbergplatz 6
Comissioned by: David Fanto
Built in 1917-18 by the architects Ernst von Gotthilf-Miskolczy and Alexander Neumann.
Named after David Fanto. He began his career as an apprentice for a paper shop in Vienna. As a successful businessman he later bought oil fields in Galicia, Rumania, and Poland. He founded one of the first Austrian refineries in Pardubitz and participated in oil-drilling concerns in the Near East.
During the war years there was a sharp recession for the mineral oil business. In 1916 David Fanto bought Pottenbrunn Castle near St. Pölten. In 1917 David Fanto built the city palace (named after him) at Schwarzenbergplatz 6. After the war he was active in Czechoslavakia on behalf of the restoration of the monarchy. David Fanto died in 1922. He left behind two daughters, and a son, Richard Fanto, who inherited Pottenbrunn Castle.
