Multi-Media Exhibition "Arnold Schönberg" (1874
1951)
"Listen to this Exhibition!"
Based on a 78 minute audio CD and a set of twelve "Small Theaters" the
exhibition offers an opportunity of obtaining a many-faceted picture of
the life and works of the composer Arnold Schönberg. Schönberg
was born in Vienna in 1874 and lived in Vienna, in Berlin and in Los Angeles,
where he died in 1951.
The exhibition includes texts, music and documentary reproductions that,
together with the recorded narration, illustrate and explain Schönberg's
musical theories, his compositions, his paintings, his writings, his teachings,
his innovations and his personal life.
The 12 "Small Theaters" ("Teatrini"), each a set of three panels,
become the visual component to com-plement the audio selections on the
accompanying CD. Each visitor is provided a CD-player with a CD in the
language of his choice. The visitor has the option of selecting specific
tracks that include illustrative spoken text, musical examples and historical
voice recordings.
The exhibition also includes three video monitors displaying documentary
videos on and of Schönberg. The two computer stations with interactive
Schönberg programs and connections to the world-wide-web Internet
Site allow visitors the option of browsing through the Arnold Schönberg
Legacy: his letters, books, photographs, paintings, writings and some
of his many innovations. The table situated adjacent to the "Teatrini"
contains musical scores, books, photograph albums and recordings by and
about Schönberg, all available for the visitors to peruse.
The exhibition has been designed for both the layman and the music scholar.
The use of modern technology will appeal to the younger audience. The
specialist will find new information by and about Schönberg and will
be stimulated to further exploration. This exhibition provides both a
panoramic vision of the life and works of Arnold Schönberg and of
the cultural climate of the first half of the twentieth century.
