The Archive includes more than 8,000 still photographic images. Most of these are black and white although several thousand color images are also included. Most of the photographs deal directly with Schoenberg in some manner, i.e. photographs of him, his family, friends, related events, places, things, etc. In order to view photographs, users were asked to first consult the Photographs Finding Aid which consists of a series of thirteen blue three-ring binders in the Reading Room. The binders contain photocopies of all of the still images in the collection. The photocopies are arranged according to the scheme below. Generally in the upper right corner of each photocopy, the user will find a four digit accession number which uniquely identifies a particular photograph. Occasionally additional information may be found on the photocopy such as date, photographer, or description. About 2,000 of the photographs have been cataloged at the item level. There is also a manual accession list of all of the photographs which may contain additional descriptive information. Consult the Archivist for more information.

The photographs themselves are stored in the Archive Vault. These are arranged by type, format, size, and accession number. An accession number is required for retrieval. Photographic copies (prints, transparencies, slides, rarely negatives) of nearly everything in the collection can be provided for a cost. Consult the Archivist for details.
