The first piece is written in pencil on three leaves which are handnumbered I1 through I3. The first leaf measures 14.6 x 36.9 cm. and contains bars 1-50 on the recto. The verso contains two crossed out sketches of bars 64-66. The second leaf is 'J.E. & Co., 48 linig' paper, trimmed to 24 staves, measuring 28.8 x 36.8 cm. and contains bars 51-96, with some corrections in black ink. The verso is blank. The third leaf is 'J.E. & Co., 48 linig' paper, trimmed to 24 staves, measuring 28.8 x 36.8 cm. and contains bars 97-128. The end of the piece is dated '23/5. 1909'. The verso is blank. The second piece is incomplete; the first draft consists of bars 57-92. The score is written in pencil on one leaf of 'J.E. & Co., 48 linig' paper, trimmed to 24 staves, measuring 28.8 x 36.9 cm. The verso is blank. The third piece is written in pencil on one leaf trimmed to 24 staves, measuring 29 x 36.8 cm. The verso is blank. Sketches for the third and fourth pieces are written in pencil and black ink on one leaf trimmed to 12 full staves, measuring 14.5 x 36.8 cm. The recto contains two sketches of bar 1 ff. and a motivic sketch of bar 40 from the third piece, and two versions of bar 1 from the fourth piece. The verso is blank. The fourth piece is written in pencil on four leaves numbered I through IV. The first three leaves measure 14.5 x 36.8 cm. The first leaf is on 'J.E. & Co., 48 linig' paper trimmed to 11 staves, and contains the first draft of bars 1-15, 19-21 with sketches of bars 16-18 and 23-32. The verso is blank. The second leaf has 12 staves and contains bars 22-36. The third leaf also has 12 staves and contains a crossed out sketch of bars 33-36 and the first draft of bars 37-60. The verso is blank. The fourth leaf is written on 'J.E. & Co., 48 linig' paper, trimmed to 8 full staves, measuring 11.5 x 36.8 cm. and contains bars 61-66. The final measure is dated '17/7 1909'. The verso is blank. The fifth piece is written in pencil on one leaf of paper trimmed to 24 staves, measuring 29 x 36.8 cm. The recto contains bars 1-100 with corrections in black ink. There is also a doodle in the right margin. The verso contains bars 100-136, and crossed out sketches of bars 123-124 ff. and 127 ff. Corrections appear in black ink. Further sketches for this work appear on two separate leaves (mfl. 376). The upper leaf measures 14.5 x 36.6 cm. and has a section measuring 5 x 11.8 cm. torn from the lower right hand corner. This leaf contains pencil sketches of bars 28-31 and an early sketch of bar 28 ff. from the second piece, two sketches of bar 10 ff. and bars 31-33 from the fourth piece. The second leaf has 11 staves and measures 14.3 x 37 cm. It contains 4 unidentified pencil sketches which were possibly intended for this piece. The versos of each leaf are blank.

The score is written in black ink on one leaf and two double leaves of 'J.E. & Co. No. 31, 30 linig' paper. The upper margin of p. [1] is marked 'II' in red pencil. There is a note in blue ink in the lower margin of p. [1]: 'Diese Abschriften hat Erwin Stein hergestellt, als ich einmal genötigt war, die Originalpartitur aus der Hand zu geben. Sie sind unkorrigiert! Also vielleicht fehlerhaft [underscored]/Arnold Schönberg'. Corrections appear in red pencil on p. [2], [7]; tempo markings are added in red and blue pencil on p. [4]. Schoenberg himself wrote p. [9]. Page [10] is blank.

The score is written in purple ink on 1 leaf and 8 double leaves of 'J.E. & Co. No. 4, 16 linig' paper. The final two double leaves are glued together. The score is in the order II, I, IV. The pages for each piece are numbered separately. Performance annotations, instrumentations, and rehearsal numbers appear throughout in pencil, orange pencil, red pencil and blue pencil. Incorrect measures are scribbled out on p. 4 and the original p. 8 of the second piece. The parts for each piece are written in purple ink and bound separately with black thread. Each part is labelled on the cover in red and blue pencil. The parts for the first piece are each written on 3 double leaves of 'J.E. & Co. No. 12' paper. Page [12] is blank on each part. The parts for the second piece are each written on 3 double leaves of 'J.E. & Co. No. 12' paper. Page [12] is blank on each part.
