Große Teile des Werkes sind als erste Niederschrift im V. Skizzenbuch [...] enthalten. Die ersten Skizzen zum Sonett, mit einer von der endgültigen Reihe noch abweichenden Fassung ( - das Sonett ist der einzige, eine zwölftönige Reihe verwwendende Satz des Werkes - ) fand der Musikologe Jan Maegaard in einem kleinen Skizzenbüchlein aus dem Jahr 1922 in dem ungeordnet gebliebenen Stoß von Skizzenblättern.

Parts for guitar, violin, mandolin, viola and violoncello; library lacks clarinet and bass clarinet parts. Fragment of third movement, measures 1-69; violoncello part contains only measures 1-56 in the part, measures 1-58 in the cues. Parts are written in black ink on 20 stave paper, with cues written in from the other parts. Signed comment by Schoenberg in left margin of recto of violin part. Each measure is numbered individually and in the margin; done in red ink in the mandolin and violoncello parts.

Sehr frei im Vortrag never became part of published score ; Andante con variazione became movement 3. For clarinet, bass clarinet, mandolin, guitar, violin, viola, violoncello. Sehr frei im Vortrag : The score consists of 39 measures and is written in black ink on two separate leaves. The first leaf is 'J.E. & Co. No. 5' paper, with 18 staves, measuring 34.9 x 26.7 cm. The verso of this leaf is blank. The order of instruments on this leaf is unusual: Mandoline - Geige - Klarinette - Bratsche - Guitarre - Bassklarinette - Violoncell; Schoenberg comments on this at the bottom of the page. This is additionally a non-transposing score. Corrections appear in pencil, red pencil and green pencil. The second leaf is 'C.A. Klemm. A. No. 8' paper, with 24 staves, measuring 35.7 x 27.2 cm. This leaf has the normal order of instruments and is written in an increasingly neater hand. Measure numbers are added in green pencil ; corrections appear in pencil and blue pencil. The score continues onto the verso. Andante con variazione : The score consists of measures 1-69 and is written in black ink on one leaf and one double leaf of 'C.A. Klemm. A. No. 8' paper with 24 staves, measuring 35.7 x 27.2 cm. Schoenberg has added comments about the notation of the clarinets and guitar in pencil at the beginning of the score. The score is written in an increasingly neater hand. Corrections appear in pencil and red pencil ; measure numbers are added on p. [1-2] in green pencil. Page [6] is blank.
