1587-1591: Handmade booklet of rows written in black ink on 5 leaves of paper, which are joined together lengthwise. The first 3 leaves measure 39.9 x 15.7 cm., the fourth measures 40.2 x 15.6 cm., the fifth measures 20.1 x 15.6 cm. The leaves fold to 7.2 x 15.9 cm. and are stored in a handmade cardboard holder, folded to 8.9 x 16 cm. The first leaf is affixed to the inside of this holder; the title is written on both sides of the cover, once in black ink, once in purple pencil.

Tone row sets written in black ink on the recto of one leaf measuring 33.8 x 19 cm. The title is written in pencil at the top of the leaf; one row is marked in pencil. The verso contains only the first five notes of the basic set on a hand drawn grid of 13 instead of 12 divisions.

Tone row chart in black ink. The rows are written on 24 horizontal strips of paper measuring 1.1 x 18 cm. which are affixed to separate cardboard strips measuring 1.6 x 17.8 cm. These strips are fastened onto one large piece of cardboard measuring 30 x 33.8 cm.

Charts written in black ink on one double leaf of 'K.U.V. Beethoven Papier Nr. 37 (24 Linien)' paper. Page [1] contains a chart of whole notes. Each line contains 13 measures, each containing the same pitch; successive lines contain the pitch 1/2 step higher. This sheet is designed to be used with templates to create various tone rows and their inversions. Pages [2-3] are blank. Page [4] contains sketches of the tone rows for this work. Template to go with Page [1] above; labelled 'Orchester-Variationen' in blue pencil. The template measures 17.2 x 21.5 cm. and has 12 rectangular holes cut out of it.

1595-1596 : Written on one leaf of 'J.E. & Co. No. 13, 22 linig' paper, measuring 26.4 x 34.6 cm. with a section measuring 6.9 x 21.4 cm. removed from the upper left hand corner. The recto contains sketches of the construction of a variation with some additions and annotations in black ink and red pencil. A lengthy note regarding the rediscovery of this sheet and the composition of one of the variations is written in black ink at the bottom of the page. It is signed and dated '28/VII. 1928'. (For a complete transcription, see Rufer, Josef. Das Werk Arnold Schönbergs, p. 34.) The verso contains an early sketch of the sixth variation meas. 202-203 ff., as well as sketches of tone rows.
1597-1598 : Written on one leaf of 15 stave paper, measuring 25.4 x 34.6 cm. The recto is dated '2/V. 1926' and contains an early sketch of the theme, meas. 34-42 ff., which is crossed out. The verso contains an early draft of the theme, meas. 34-57, followed by a sketch of the first variation, 8 measures, which is crossed out. The upper right hand corner is labelled 'III'. Orchestration notes appear in the right margin. An additional stave has been handdrawn in blue ink in the bottom margin.
1599-1600 : Written on one leaf of 15 stave paper, measuring 25.3 x 34.6 cm. The recto contains sketches of the Introduction, meas. 1-3 ff. and the beginning of the third variation, meas. 106-109 ff. The verso contains a sketch of the second variation, meas. 82-84 ff. The first five measures are crossed out.
1601-1602 : Written on one leaf trimmed to 10 staves, measuring 12.2 x 34.6 cm. The recto contains sketches of tone rows in combination and two unidentified measures. The verso contains a sketch marked 'Canon' of 3 measures, an early sketch for the sixth variation [?].
1603-1604 : Written on one leaf of 15 stave paper, measuring 19.4 x 34.6 cm. The recto contains the same measures as mfl. 1602, along with other sketches with rhythmic and motivic similarities to the sixth variation. The upper right hand corner is labelled 'IX'. The verso continues these sketches.
1605-1606 : Written on one leaf of 15 stave paper, measuring 19.4 x 34.6 cm. The recto contains sketches for the sixth variation. There is one annotation in red pencil. The verso continues these sketches.
1607-1608 : Written on one leaf of 15 stave paper, measuring 19.3 x 34.6 cm. The recto contains an unfinished sketch of the first 15 measures of what was originally going to be the fourth variation; 'Var IV' is written in the left margin. There is a comment in the bottom margin. The upper right hand corner is labelled 'VIII', holes are punched in the left hand margin that match those in the first draft leaves. The verso contains measure 256 (Var. VII)
1609-1610 : Written on one leaf of 15 stave paper, measuring 19.4 x 34.6 cm. The recto and verso contain sketches with rhythmic and motivic from the beginning of the finale (mm. 310-313, 334-335, 363, 367-368, 378-379).
1609 bears iterations of the musical anagram of B-A-C-H in the upper right corner.
1611-1612 : Written on one leaf of 'K.U.V. Beethoven Papier Nr. 37 (24 Linien)' paper, measuring 33.9 x 26.5 cm. The recto contains the beginning of the seventh variation, measures 238-239 ff. and the tone row structures for the basis of this movement. There is a sketch of seven unidentified measures, one part only, on the verso.
1613-1614 : Written on two double leaves trimmed to 4 staves each, measuring 4.8 x 34.6 cm. Pages [2-3] of each leaf are blank. The first leaf is dated '2/V. 1926' on p. [1] and contains the tone row structure for the theme, with three measures scribbled out. Page [4] contains one unidentified measure. The second leaf is also dated '2/V. 1926' and contains an early sketch of the theme, meas. 34 ff. Page [4] contains sketches of a tone row structure for an unidentified part of this work.

The recto of the first leaf contains early sketches of the beginning of the fifth variation; the first 3 measures are crossed out. 'Var V' is written in the right hand margin. The verso contains other early sketches, labelled 'Var IV' and 'Var VI'. The recto of the second leaf contains brief early sketches labelled 'Var VI', 'Var VII' and 'VIII', with some tone rows labelled. The verso contains other sketches, among them an early version of the sixth variation [?]. Number signs, written in red pencil, appear in the left hand margins of each leaf.
1630 : Written on two separate leaves trimmed to 10 staves each, measuring 12.2 x 34.6 cm. The recto of each leaf contains early sketches of the fourth variation; the first leaf includes an inversion. The versos of each leaf are blank.
1631-1632 : Written on one leaf of 'J.E. & Co. 42 linig' paper, trimmed to 21 staves, measuring 26.9 x 38.3 cm. The recto contains sketches of the eighth variation, meas. 262-263, a complete inversion of the theme, and a sketch of combinations of hexachords, as well as a few separate chords. The verso contains sketches of several measures, including meas. 346-347 and 298 (Var. IX) (the upper sketches)
1633 : Written on one leaf of paper trimmed to 15 staves, measuring 19.5 x 34.7 cm., with a section cut out, measuring 7.9 x 1.7 cm., near the right margin. The recto contains sketches for the finale, including one of the main themes. The third system is a sketch for meas. 407 although most of the notes are different the accented notes (Bb, E, Gb, Eb) are the notes of P0. The verso contains an unidentified six measure sketch which is crossed out.
1634 : Written on one leaf of paper trimmed to 15 staves, measuring 25.2 x 34.1 cm. The recto contains a sketch of tone rows written in black ink and sketches of the second variation written in pencil. The verso is blank except for a 'T' written in the left hand margin.
1635 : Written on one leaf of 'K.U.V. Beethoven Papier Nr. 37. (24 Linien)' paper trimmed to 7 staves, measuring 9.8 x 24.9 cm. 'Noch eine Variation der Takt[e] 18-20 der Einleitung/auch eine[?] früheren[?] Variation andeuten/auch über Takt 24-25/auch in der Coda'--written in pencil on the recto, with a four note musical example [B-A-C-H] written in green pencil. 1636 : Written in black ink and pencil on one leaf of paper trimmed to 10 staves, measuring 12.3 x 34.6 cm. The recto contains a 9 measure sketch of a section not used in this work [?] (from Josquin Agnus Dei from Missa L'homme armé super voces musicales), here written for English horn, horn and violoncello in 3/4 time. The verso is blank.
1637 : Written in black ink and pencil on one leaf of paper trimmed to 10 staves, measuring 12.3 x 34.6 cm. The recto contains a 9 measure sketch of the same section as mfl. 1636, here written for Soprano, Tenor and Bass in 9/8 time (from Josquin above). The verso is blank.
1638 : Written on two separate leaves, each trimmed to 5 staves. The first leaf measures 5.8 x 33.6 cm.; the second measures 5.9 x 34.7 cm. The rectos of each leaf contain sketches of the same section as archive no. 1636. The first leaf's sketch is less developed than the second. The versos of each leaf are blank.

Konvolut aus 30 lose beieinanderliegenden Blättern vorgedruckten Notenpapiers und einem beiliegenden Einband, dessen ursprüngliche Bindung gänzlich augelöst ist. Erste Niederschrift in From eines Particells.
Durchlaufende Taktnumerierung mit schwarzem Nummernstempel, eine frühere handschriftliche Taktnummerierung, 1-129, weicht von T.6 an ab (Nummerierung von T. 6 ausgelassen, Bezifferung von T. 7 an um 1 niedriger); die falsche Numerierung wurde nachträglich korrigiert. Üderdies sind einige Abschnitte nochmals gesondert numeriert: T.130-167=1-38 (handschriftlich), T.238-257=1-20 (gestempelt), T.310-520 (Finale)=1-211 (handschriftlich). Bisweilen Zeichen, die auf benutzten Reihenformen verweisen. Seiten- und Akkoladendisposition sowie Kennzahlen, die die Breite der Takte angeben, zeigen die detaillierte Plannung bei der Vorbereitung der Partiturreinschrift an. Diese Angaben stimmen ohne Ausnahme mit der Disposition in der Partiturreinschrift überein. Am linken Rand der ersten zwölf Blätter (Archiv Nr. 1554-1565) drei Lochungen in folgender Anordnung: oben eine Lochung, dann weiter unten zwei weitere untereinander; die restlichen Blätter mit doppelter Lochung am linken Rand.

Holograph first draft. Score originally bound in cardboard cover with handwritten title in red pencil. The following note also is written on the front cover in pencil and black ink 'angefangen in Berlin 1926 Frühjahr ca. 200 Takte componiert fortgesetzt und beendigt Roquebrune, Cap Martin, Frankreich, Juli u. August 1928 [underscored] [continuation in ink] dort mehr als 300 komponiert und die Partitur angefertigt'. The inside back cover contains a long list of timings and metronome markings for the various sections of the score, written in pencil. The back cover also has the title, printed in red pencil. The score is written in condensed form on 30 numbered leaves, varying in size from 19.2 x 34.6 cm. to 27 x 38.2 cm. The paper used includes 'J.E. & Co. No. 13, 22 linig', 'J.E. & Co. 42 linig' and many leaves that have no statement of manufacture. The number of staves on these leaves vary, and Schoenberg has added staves in the lower margins where needed. The music is written on consecutive leaves, which are numbered I-XX, C1-C12; XIV is on the verso of XIII, and XIX is on the verso of XVIII. The pages are also numbered by ink stamp, 1-54, with the final 3 leaves remaining unnumbered in this manner. The measures are numbered by ink stamp throughout; the stamp is also used on some leaves to indicate the time signature. Corrections and annotations are made in black ink, red pencil, green pencil, purple pencil and blue pencil. Marginal notes appear on several leaves; some of these are signed. The verso of leaf III contains an early sketch of measures 65-69 ff. which is crossed out; the upper right hand corner is numbered 'IV'. The final measure of Leaf IX is signed and dated in red pencil 'Änderung 29/I. Schönberg'. Leaf X contains marginal notes and sketches about the final orchestration. Leaf XIII/XIV contains sketches of chordal combinations of tone rows on the verso. The verso of leaf C5 contains a sketch of 4 unidentified measures marked 'Allegro molto'. The final measure, on leaf C12, is signed and dated: 'Roquebrune 21.VIII.1928'.
