An autographen Quellen ist neben den Kompositionsentwürfen und Teilen der Erstniederschrift (A) die Reinschrift (B) überliefert. Von dieser Reinschrift wurden zwei Kopien hergestellt, die eine (Ba) verblieb in Schönbergs Besitz, die andere (Bb) übersandte er dem Verlag als Vorlage für den Druck der Partitur (C) und der Stimmen (D). Vom Partiturdruck liegt ein Exemplar mit handschriftlichen Eintragungen Schönbergs vor (Ca).

Holograph first draft (incomplete).
Incomplete first draft written in pencil on 9 leaves of 'Parchment Brand No. 19 - 24 lines' from Belwin Inc. containing bars 40-42, 105-112, 207-211, 239-317, 430-433, 614-622, 630-633, 638-656, 681-689, 704-773, 787-935.
Mfl. 1004-1005 : The recto contains bars 105-112, 40-42, and 239-248. The last group of measures is inscribed 'fortgesetzt nach Vollendung des III. Satzes, 11/VI. 36' in black ink. The verso contains bars 249-270, which are incorrectly numbered 250-271 in pink pencil.
Mfl. 1006-1007 : The recto contains bars 271-284. The verso contains bars 638-656 and two sketches of bars 680-681. Bar 638 is written in black ink, the rest of the leaf is written in pencil.
Mfl. 1008-1011 : Written on one double leaf. Page [1] contains two sketches of bars 169 ff., a sketch of bar 186 and two sketches of bars 188-193, and a draft of bars 207-211. Page [2] contains sketches of bars 79 ff., 99, 116 ff., several sketches of bar 324 ff., a sketch of bars 417 ff. and three unidentified sketches, possibly for the second movement. One sketch is in black ink. Page [3] contains sketches of bars 733 ff., 292 ff., 714 ff., 630-635 and one unidentified sketch, possibly for the second movement. Page [4] contains a sketch of bars 239 ff. and a draft of bars 714-736. The measure numbers are stamped in this portion of the draft.
Mfl. 1012-1013 : The recto contains bars 681-689 (which are misnumbered by hand 683-691), bars 704-713 and bars 737-742 (misnumbered by ink stamp 739-744). The second draft section is dated '18.VI.36'. The verso continues the draft, containing bars 743-763 (misnumbered 745-765).
Mfl. 1014-1015 : The recto contains bars 764-773, a sketch of bars 773-778, followed by a draft of bars 787-792. All of the stamped measure numbers from here on are off by 2. The verso continues the draft, bars 793-812.
Mfl. 1016-1017 : The recto contains bars 813-831; the verso contains bars 851-870. Each side has '9 1/2 133 Copper' written in the right margin. 'H.J.' is added to this phrase on the verso. 'from op 37/4th string quartet'--written in pencil in the bottom right hand corner of the verso.
Mfl. 1018-1019 : The recto contains bars 871-891; the verso contains bars 832-850.
Mfl. 1020-1021 : The recto contains bars 892-910; the verso continues the draft to the end (bars 911-935). The end is dated '26. Juli 1936/Arnold Schoenberg', followed by 'tratto drawn/saltando tapped'.

Each leaf is described by microfilm number and is written in pencil unless otherwise indicated.
Mfl. 1022 : Written on one double leaf of 'Style No. 9 - 12 Staves with Braces' from G. Schirmer, measuring 33.1 x 26.6 cm. The sketch on p. [1] is written upside down and contains bars 827-832. Page [3] contains two short unidentified violin passages. Pages [2] and [4] are blank.
Mfl. 1023-1025 : Written on two separate leaves. The larger leaf is 'Style No. 9 - 12 Staves with Braces' from G. Schirmer and measures 33.1 x 26.4 cm. The recto contains sketches of bars 1-6, the tone row and its inversion at the fifth, and bars 10-15. The verso is written in black ink and contains sketches based on the tone row and thematic sketches of bars 42-44, 430 ff. and 733 ff. The smaller leaf has 5 handdrawn staves in black ink on both the recto and the verso. The leaf measures 8.8 x 13.5 cm. and is affixed to the right hand margin of the verso of the larger leaf. Two holes are punched in the lower margin. The recto contains sketches in black and blue ink of thematic passages and bars 733 ff., 42-44. The verso is written in black ink and contains sketches of thematic passages and bars 292 ff., 714 ff. and 630-635. These sketches are marked with Roman numerals and often have tempo markings.
Mfl. 1026-1029 : Written on one double leaf of 'Parchment Brand No. 19 - 24 lines' from Belwin Inc., measuring 34.3 x 27.2 cm. Page [1] contains several sketches of bars 524-533 and one sketch of bars 518-523. Page [2] contains sketches of bars 292 ff., marked 'Moderato' and written in black ink and pencil, followed by pencil sketches of bars 285-317, 430-433. Page [3] contains sketches of bars 630-633, 733 ff. and 614-622. Page [4] contains row sketches written in pencil and black ink. Some of these sketches are written as chromatic scales with lines connecting these notes in the proper sequence. There are also hexachord sketches; a short sketch, possibly for the fourth movement; and a sketch of bars 704-710 ff.
Mfl. 1030 : Written on two separate leaves. The first leaf is trimmed to 10 staves and measures 14.1 x 19.3 cm. The recto contains a sketch of bars 740-741. The second leaf is torn from a spiral bound notebook and measures 20.5 x 12.7 cm. This leaf contains a calculation of timings for the fourth movement, written in black ink.
Mfl. 1031-1032 : Written on one leaf with 8 handdrawn staves on both the recto and verso. The leaf measures 15.1 x 23.8 cm. The recto contains a sketch of the primary row and its inversion at the fifth, each transposed down a whole step, and a sketch of chords based on the row. The verso contains many short sketches, some written in black ink. There are sketches based on the row and sketches of bars 128, 1-3, 42-44, 66-68, 116-118, 27, 37-38, 48-49, 63, 79-80, 95 and 100.
Musical sketches written in black ink on one double leaf of stationery from 'El Mirasol Hotel/Santa Barbara/California' which measures 17.4 x 14.3 cm. The recto has 4 handdrawn staves and contains thematic sketches. The 'Largo' was not used, 'Rasch' is a sketch of bars 292 ff., 'Prest' [sic] is a sketch of bars 714 ff. Pencilled arithmetic appears near the bottom of the page and 'Arnold Schönberg' is stamped in red ink. The verso has 7 handdrawn staves, but they are not used.
Tone row table written in black ink on 2 leaves of music paper affixed to 2 pieces of cardboard which are bound together; folded size 16 x 11.3 cm. The pitches are numbered in red pencil and the title, 'IV. Streich-Quartett' is written in red ink.
Tone row table written in black ink on 12 pieces of cardboard which vary in height from 10.1 x 12.4 cm. to 3.1 x 12.4 cm. Each piece of cardboard contains a row and its inversion at the fifth; each successive pair of rows is transposed up a half step. Each piece is numbered, 1 through 12, and has a tab which shows the transposition of the primary row contained on the piece. Each piece is numbered 1 through 12 and has a a tab showing the note the primary row starts on. Stored in handmade cardboard holder.

B Reinschrift

Die Reinschrift, die Schönberg in den Monaten nach der Vollendung der Komposition am 26. Juli 1936 der Widmungsträgerin Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge übergab, wurde von ihr am 6. Februar 1937 der Library of Congress als Geschenk vermacht.

Konvolut aus 3 Lagen Notenpapier, die durch schwarzen Faden geheftet und - wohl von Schönberg - in einem Umschlag mit je einem Schmutztitel vorn und hinten gebunden sind.

Umschlag und Bindung

Pappkarton mit weißem Papieraufzug, quer 240-350 mmm; hinten ist ein zusätzlicher fahlgrüner Papierumschlag mit Tesastreifen innen verklebt; die Schmutztitel sind aus weißem Papier. Die Bindung erfolgte über die schwarze Fadenheftung hinaus durch 5 grauweißgelbe Leinenstreifen; das erste Blatt der ersten bzw. das letzte der dritten Lage Notenpapier ist mit dem Umschlag verklebt, zusätzliche Verstärkung durch weiße Papierstreifen. Auf der ersten Umschlagseite ist ien weißes Etikett mit vorgedrucktem rotem Rahmen aufgeklebt, darauf als Typoskript: Arnold Schoenberg / Original Manuscript of / IV. String Quartett - Opus 37 / Dedicated to Mrs. E.S.Coolidge). Mehrere Eintragungen von fremder Hand mit Bleistift, so an einigen Stellen die Bibliothekssignatur und auf der Verso-Seite des vorderen Schmutztitels der Autorenname: Schönberg, Arnold.

Notenbögen

Die drei Lagen umfassen 5, 4 bzw. 6 Bögen, die durch Halbierung von Originalbögen einer Sorte vorgedruckten Notenpapiers entstanden sind: hoch ca 455x340 mm; 30 Systeme vorgedruckt; am Fuß aller 4 Seiten Firmenzeichen: links Style No.18-30 Staves, Mitte Printed in the U.S.A., rechts G.Schirmer Inc., New York. Die drei Lagen umfassen 8 Unterhälften (Lage I 2. und 3. Bogen; Lage II alle 4 Bögen, Lage III 1. und 5. Bogen) und Oberhälften solcher Originalbögen; während die Unterhälften stets in Richtung des Vordrucks - also mit Firmenzeichen unten - benutzt wurden, liegen die Oberhälften zum Teil in Richtung des Vordruckes - also mit dem Rand oben - (Lage I 1. Bogen; Lage III 2. bis 4. Bogen), zum Teil in umgekehrter Richtung (Lage I 4. und 5. Bogen; Lage III 6. Bogen). Die Höhe der Bögen schwankt zwischen 225 und 229 mmm; ihre Seiten weisen je 15 Systeme auf, das System an der Schnittkante ist bei den Oberhälften zuweilen unvollständig. Das erste Blatt der I. Lage und das letzte der III. Lage sind mit dem Umschlag verklebt; es bleiben also 28 Blätter = 56 Seiten.

This copy was originally bound in handmade cardboard cover with tan cloth spine and the title 'Correctur Exemplar' written in pencil. Corrections appear in the score in white pencil, red pencil, black ink, blue pencil, green pencil, white ink on p. 1-18, 20, 22-40, 42-44, 47, 49-54. A separate piece of paper, correcting one measure, is affixed to p. 37. Accompanying material : Errata list for 2 measures written in pink pencil on one torn leaf measuring 8.3 x 21.5 cm.

Konvolut (quer 203-278 mm) aus 20 lose beieinanderliegenden Teilen.
Die Reinschrift wurde unter Beibehaltung der Schwarzweißfärbung in gleicher Weise auf 29 Bögen kopiert wie bei Ba. Der 1.-22. Bogen wurden so zusammengefügt wie der 1.-17. und 23.-29. vn Ba; das erste Blat des 22. Bogens wurde abgeschnnitten. Die Blätter des 23.-28. Bogens sind im Falz auseinandergeschnitten und neu zusammengeklebt. Das zweite - leere - Blatt des 29. Bogens entfiel. Bindung im Falz durch Verklebung und verstärkende Papier- bzw. Klebestreifen.
