MS 46, Nr. 112

Tone row chart written in black ink on two leaves affixed to two pieces of cardboard bound together as one leaf measuring 19.4 x 32.5 cm. Tone row chart written in black ink on 12 pieces of cardboard which vary in height from 17.4 x 13 cm. to 3.4 x 13 cm. Each piece of cardboard contains a row and its inversion at the fifth; each successive pair of rows is transposed up a half step. Each piece has a tab, marking which rows are written on it. An additional piece of cardboard, measuring 20.4 x 14.7 cm., contains an unidentified row and three of its inversions. The final inversion is written in pencil. This row has no interval greater than a minor third. Each of the notes of this primary row is labelled with a number for each of the piano concerto's primary row and transpositions. Stored in larger piece of cardboard, folded to 23.5 x 13.2 cm. with timings handwritten in black ink and pencil on the inside.

MS 46, Nr. 113, Nr. 114

Written on one leaf trimmed to 4 full staves, measuring 6.6 x 33.9 cm. The recto contains an early version of bars 1-4, based on a slightly different tone row. The leaf is entitled 'Concerto for piano and orchestra'. The right margin contains the following in black ink: 'June 27 1942 1) Life was so pleasant 2) suddenly hatred broke out 3) a grave situation'. The rest of this music has been cut from the leaf. The verso contains an early version of bars 1-4 accompanied by the inversion at the fifth, followed by a sketch of bars 1-7. There are numbers [possibly timings?] in the right hand margin.

MS 46, Nr. 115

Written on one leaf of 'G. Schirmer, New York, Style 14 - 34 Staves' paper, trimmed to 17 full staves measuring 27.2 x 34.1 cm. The recto contains an unidentified 12 measure sketch of eighth notes with the tone row and its inversions and transpositions labelled. The sketch is possibly for bar 342 ff. The verso is blank.

MS 46, Nr. 116, Nr. 117

Written in pencil and black ink on one leaf trimmed to 17 full staves, measuring 27 x 33.9 cm. The recto contains 5 short unidentified sketches along with sketches of bars 198-199, bar 229 , bar 199 and its inversion, three sketches of bar 227, three sketches of bar 231 and a sketch of bar 266-267, transposed. The verso contains 3 short unidentified sketches, two sketches of bar 266 ff. (transposed), sketches of bar 268, 271-273, 302, and two sketches of bars 308-309.

MS 46 , Nr. 118

Written in blue ink on one leaf trimmed to 23 x 23.3 cm. with 10 hand drawn staves on the recto. One is from a carbon, the others are in blue ink. The recto contains the variant tone row and its inversion at the fifth. This is followed by an early sketch of bars 1-33 based on that row. Corrections are made in black ink. At the final measure Schoenberg has written in pencil: 'repeated in orchestra/piano adds a contermelody [sic]/this [countermelody] is repeated in orchestra, piano adds a second contermelody [sic]/all three togethe[r]'. The verso is blank.

MS 46, Nr. 119

Written in pencil and black ink on one leaf measuring 27.8 x 21.5 cm. with 13 hand drawn staves in black ink. The recto contains 2 sketches, possibly early 468 ff., and a sketch of bars 459-461. The verso is blank.

MS 46, Nr. 120

Written in black ink on one leaf of transparent paper, 'Maestro No. 106' from Independent Music Publishers, measuring 37.6 x 27.9 cm. The first sketch is an early version of bars 1-7, based on the variant tone row. The second sketch is of bars 1-39, with different orchestration indicated. One correction is made in orange pencil. Additions are made in pencil. The top of the leaf is dated 'July 5, 1942'.

Written on one leaf of 'Style No. 18 - 30 Staves' paper from G. Schirmer, trimmed to 10 staves, measuring 16 x 33 cm. The recto contains a sketch of bars 1-16. Bar 12 has fingering indicated; a marginal note in black ink describes the numbering. The verso contains several sketches of an unidentified passage of sixteenth notes, written in black ink and labelled 'IInd movm[?]'.

Written on one leaf of 'Style No. 18 - 30 Staves' paper from G. Schirmer, trimmed to 10 staves, measuring 16.3 x 33 cm. The recto contains a sketch of bar 107 ff. transposed up a whole step. There are a few corrections in black ink. The verso contains two crossed out sketches of bars 117 ff. transposed down a half step. '117 : 13 = 9'--written in the upper right hand corner.

MS 46, Nr. 125, Nr. 129

Written on one leaf of 'Style No. 18 - 30 Staves' from G. Schirmer. The recto contains a sketch of bars 103-106 written in 2/8; however, Schoenberg has written under bar 104 'better 4/8' and has grouped the bars accordingly. The recto also contains a sketch of bar 107-112 and an early sketch of bar 115. The verso contains a sketch of bars 133-140 and bar 143 ff.

MS 46, Nr. 126

Written in black ink of one trimmed leaf of transparent paper, measuring 13.5 x 18.3 cm. The leaf contains bars 117-120 and was apparently originally part of the fair copy. The entire passage is crossed out and Schoenberg has written the following on the leaf: 'It cost two days to find out what was wrong!/A great error in construction at measure 13 x 9 = 117'. Also '13 x 9 [=] 117!!!' is written in the left margin. Two measures on the fifth stave have been cut from the leaf.

Written on one leaf of 'Style No. 18 - 30 Staves' from G. Schirmer, trimmed to 12 full staves, measuring 18.8 x 34.1 cm. The recto contains a sketch of bars 117-130. The verso contains sketches of bars 70-71, 75-77, 77-79, bars 1-7 transposed down a minor third (written in black ink), a seven measure inversion of the theme, and five sketches of bars 104-105.

Written on one double leaf of 'Style No. 18 - 30 Staves' from G. Schirmer, trimmed to 10 full staves, measuring 16.2 x 33 cm. Page [1] contains sketches of bars 133-140, 143-144. Page [2] contains an early sketch, possibly of bar 98 ff. The left margin is marked 'meas 86 + 6??'. Page [3] contains sketches in pencil and black ink of bar 132 and possibly an early version of bar 75 ff. Page [4] contains a one measure sketch labelled '146'.

Written on one leaf of 'Style No. 18 - 30 Staves' from G. Schirmer, trimmed to 10 full staves, measuring 16.2 x 33 cm. Two hand drawn staves have been added to the lower margin of the recto in black ink. The recto contains an early sketch of bar 468 ff. which is labelled 'C' in red pencil in the left margin. The verso contains two sketches of bar 468 ff.

MS 46, Nr. 148

Written in black ink on one leaf trimmed to 17 full staves, measuring 27.2 x 34.2 cm. The leaf contains sketches to go with the programmatic notes. '1. Life was so easy' is written above a sketch of the tone row. 'suddenly hatred broke out' is written above a passage marked 'Presto', probably an early sketch of bar 186 ff. 'a grave situation was created' is written above another sketch, probaly an early version of bar 215 ff. This sketch is continued at the bottom of the leaf. 'But life goes on' is written above a sketch of bars 330-333, which is also marked 'humorous' in pencil. The verso is blank.

The score contains bars 330-492 and is written in condensed form in pencil on 7 trimmed leaves of 'G. Schirmer (Inc.) New York, Style 14 - 34 Staves', having 16 or 17 full printed staves. Some leaves have up to 2 hand drawn staves in black ink; these are added when needed. The draft begins on mfl. 134, following an early sketch of bar 306 ff. and sketches of bars 311-312. There is also an unidentified sketch in black ink. This leaf contains bars 330-344 of the first draft. The verso is blank. The second leaf contains bars 345-352 ff. and 357-365 ff. on the recto, 366-383 on the verso. The third leaf contains bars 384-399 on the recto, 408-420 on the verso.
