Die Quellen zu op. 43 sind Teil eines Filiationszusammenhangs, in den auch die im Band 14,1 der Reihe B beschriebenen Quellen zu Thema und Variationen für Orchester, op. 43 B, gehören. Im Gegensatz zu der Orchesterfassung sind für die Bläserfassung mehrere autographe Quellen überliefert: Die Skizzen [Archivnr. 1845-1887], die erste Niederschrift [Archivnr. 1821-1844] und die Lichtpausreinschrift [Archivnr. 1777-1820]. Die von fremder Hand angefertigte Stichvorlage ist verschollen, ebenso Schönbergs Vorlage für den Partiturdruck der Orchesterfassung. Vom Partiturdruck dieser Fassung, die 1944 erschien, liegen drei Exemplare mit handschriftlichen Eintragungen Schönbergs vor. 1949 erschienen sowohl die verkleinerte Studienpartitur der Orchesterfassung als auch die gedruckte Partitur der Bläserfassung mit dem Stimmenmaterial.

The leaf contains two converging chromatic scales, each spanning an octave plus a major third, ending on the g above middle c. The verso is blank. Mfl. 1885 : Written in black ink on three leaves designed for billing, measuring 21 x 14 cm., containing orchestration charts. The versos are blank. Mfl. 1886-1887 : Written on two separate leaves affixed to either side of a piece of cardboard measuring 28 x 20.2 cm. The recto is written on a leaf with 13 staves and contains brief sketches for the beginning of each variation with timings. A smaller leaf is affixed to the recto, measuring 12.6 x 10.7 cm., on which Schoenberg has written 'divisi are used in two ways/both in large notes must be played/those in small notes can be omitted if all players can play the main part/have to be played by weaker players/while good ones play the main voice'. The verso is written on one leaf of lined paper and contains a measure number chart of the piece, broken down by variations. The numbers are either ink stamped or written in pencil. Groupings of measures are given in red pencil. Written in pencil and purple pencil on one leaf measuring 5.6 x 33.8 cm. The recto contains calculations on timings and the following note on copying: 'the paper on which the masters have to be written must be 12 4/8 by 8 1/4 (or 14 by 9 1/2) inches'. The verso is blank. Typewritten and handwritten on one leaf measuring 13.8 x 21.5 cm. The recto contains a typewritten carbon copy of performance instructions, mentioning piccolo, oboes and bassoons, horns, alto sax, tenor and baritone sax. The verso contains detailed handwritten calculations of timings.

Erste Niederschrift

Konvolut ohne Umschlag aus 24 Blättern verschiedenartigen Notenpapiers, bei dem die Systeme alle von Hand aufgetragen sind. 3 Löcher von ca. 6mm Durchmesser im Abstand von 10 cm lassen eine frühere Lochheftung bei der Mehrzahl der Blätter erkennen. Die Blätter sind bis auf eine Ausnahme nur auf der Vorderseite beschrieben; fast alle sind mit Bleistift beschriftet. In Bezug auf den Inhalt ist allgemein zu bemerken, daß die Niederschrift teilweise schon ausführliche Instrumentationsangaben enthält. Innerhalb des Konvoluts mit der ersten Niederschrift befinden sich auch einige Skizzen zu Variation VI und dem Finale.

The score contains bars 25-278 and is written in pencil on leaves with from 9 to 14 hand drawn staves, primarily in black ink, and measuring from 27.8 x 21.4 cm. to 30.3 x 27.9 cm. The measures are numbered throughout, primarily in red pencil. Mfl. 1821 : has staves drawn in blue ink, and Schoenberg has written in the right margin 'after a long interruption/started here/June 20, 1943'. Mfl. 1822 : has the following written in the lower margin: 'June 20 started after a long interruption (counterpoint textbook)'. Mfl. 1823 : is dated 'June 20, 1943'. Mfl. 1827 : contains the note 'improve from mes. 79'. On mfl. 1828, bar 93 is corrected through cutting and pasting, and the following four measures contain a short sketch where Schoenberg has written 'reserve for later/F major first/f# minor later' and 'reserved for later use'. Mfl. 1839 : At the top is written and crossed out 'a few measures of introduction preceeding [sic] this'. Mfl. 1844 : The end of the piece is inscribed 'ending sketched July 3, 1943'. Several leaves are expanded in size through pasting on smaller leaves: mfl. 1828, mfl. 1836, mfl. 1837, mfl. 1838, mfl. 1839, mfl. 1840, mfl. 1844. Mfl. 1837 : The verso contains pencil sketches. The first is marked 'last form for finale' in red pencil and is of bars 227-233. There are four other short sketches, possibly early versions of bar 213 ff.

Lichtpausreinschrift

Konvolut, quer 255 x 382 mm, aus dünnem Pappumschlag mit grauem Packpapierrücken, 4 Lagen (I-IV) zu je drei Bögen und 43 Lichtpausblätter, die mit transparenten Klebestreifen auf die Seiten aufgeklebt wurden; die Lagen I und IV sind mit grünem Leinenrücken, II und III mit braunem Papierrücken verstärkt; weiße Fadenheftung. Die Lichtpausblätter wurden derart aufgeklebt, daß sich die Titelseite und die ungeradzahlig numerierten Blätter auf den Recto- Seiten, die geradzahlig numerierten auf den Verso- Seiten befinden. Das letzte mit 42 numerierte Lichtpausblatt bildet eine Ausnahme: statt auf die Verso- Seite des vorletzten Blattes wurde es auf die Recto- Seite des letzten Blattes aufgeklebt [...].
Auf der Umschlagseite ist ein weißes Etikett in der Mitte auf die Pappe aufgeklebt; auf dem Etikett (autograph): THEME AND VARIATIONS / FOR WIND BAND / Originals on transparent paper; rechts unten auf der Umschlagpappe befindet sich Schönbergs Paraphe [...].
Durchlaufende Paginierung mit Bleistift in der rechten oberen Ecke des Blattes mit Ausnahme der Blätter 2-5, bei denen die Seitenzahlen mit schwarzer Tinte eingetragen sind.

The score is written on 42 numbered leaves of transparent paper. The first four leaves are written on 'Maestro No. 107' from Independent Music Publishers, measuring 37.5 x 28 cm. and are in full score format. The remaining leaves are in condensed score format, have from 8 to 12 hand drawn staves in black ink and measure from 22.4 x 34.4 cm. to 24.2 x 33.6 cm. The score is taped onto 24 leaves which are bound in handmade cardboard binding with the cover title: 'Theme and variations for wind band. Originals on transparent paper'. The larger transparent leaves are folded to fit on the bound leaves. Timings are written on the verso of the t.p. Corrections are made to the score through cutting and taping. Schoenberg's short signature appears on the cover. The end of the piece is inscribed in pencil: 'finished July 3, 1943/score finished/August 24, 1943/Arnold Schoenberg'. Copyright information is also written on p. 42, in black ink 'Copyright 1943 by Arnold Schoenberg/116 N. Rockingham Ave./Los Angeles 24, Calif.'
