All the sketches are written in black ink on 'J.E. & Co. No. 12a, 20 linig' paper (26.7 x 34.7 cm.) unless otherwise noted.

Mfl. 1403
: The first four systems contain the first draft of the work which corresponds to measures 75 ff. in the final piece. The next two systems contain pencil sketches of bars 18-26 ff. (Pelleas theme) and an early version of Golo's theme in Eb major.

Mfl. 1404 : The top of the page contains a programmatic outline of the work divided into three major sections written in pencil. Musical sketches resume under this consisting of drafts of bars 18-26, 19-30 ff., 25-31.

Mfl. 1405 : The first system continues the sketch from the 2nd system of 1404 (bars 19-30 ff.). The 2nd system contains bars 44-54 ff. in E major. The sketch is not used in the final piece.

Mfl. 1406 : Two sketches for the second theme beginning at bar 89. The first sketch is labeled 'IIa' in orange pencil; the second is labeled 'b' also in orange pencil.

Mfl. 1407 : This sketch is written on 'J.E. & Co. No. 14, 24 linig' paper and consists of sketches for bars 1-18. Some bars are crossed out and show erasures.

Mfl. 1408 : The sketch is on the verso of 1407. Systems 1-3 are sketches for the measures around bar 125. Systems 4 and 5 are sketches for bars 160-182, and systems 6-8 are for bars 133-157.

Mfl. 1409 : There are sketches for bars 160-169 followed by a sketch of Pelleas' theme. The 2nd system sketches a harmonized version of Pelleas' theme followed by another version of Pelleas' theme crossed out by orange pencil. This is followed by bars 110-116. A sketch of bars 124 ff. is crossed out followed by a sketch of bars 117-125.

Mfl. 1410 : The 1st system begins in pencil, but the rest of the sketch is in ink. The page contains sketches for bars 34-38 ff., 42-43, 54-57, and 58-70 ff.

Mfl. 1411 : The page contains sketches for bars 178-213 and 217-237 on 'J.E. & Co. No. 14, 24 linig paper.'

Mfl. 1412 : The page appears on the verso of 1411 and contains sketches of bars 244, 246 ff., 244-246, 248-249, 248, and 251-264.

Mfl. 1413 : The page contains sketches for bars 303-310 ff. including five bars which are crossed out and bars 317-332. It also bears the arabic numeral one written in orange pencil in the upper left corner, and is the first of 8 consecutive sketch pages.

Mfl. 1414 : This page bears pencil sketches except for the last system which is in ink. It contains sketches for bars 329-360 ff., 542, and other unidentified bars.

Mfl. 1415: The sketch continues from 1413, is numbered p. 2 in orange pencil, and consists of bars 333-370.

Mfl. 1416 : The sketch continues from 1414, is numbered p. 3 in orange pencil, and consists of bars 371-377 and 385-421. Three bars are crossed out with blue pencil between bars 377 and 385. Pencilled doodles appear in the margin.

Mfl. 1417 : This is an early sketch for the bars around 468-469. Much of the sketch is not used in the final piece. It is numbered p. 5 in orange pencil, and three bars are crossed-out in pencil in the second system.

Mfl. 1418: The sketch continues from 1416, is numbered p. 4 in orange pencil, and consists of bars 422-449 ff. and bars 455-458. Three bars are crossed out in the first system.

Mfl. 1419 : The sketch continues from 1417, is numbered p. 6 in blue pencil, and consists of bars 513-16, 522 ff. and 535-542. It is written on paper measuring 34.7 x 26.7 cm.

Mfl. 1420 : The sketch continues from 1419, is numbered p. 7 in blue pencil, and consists of bars 542-585. The melody does not strictly conform to the final version. It is written on paper measuring 34.7 x 26.7 cm.

Mfl. 1421 : The sketch continues from 1420 and completes the piece. A note in blue pencil refers to p. 3 followed by a sketch of bars 378-383 which completes the sketches for 1416. The page is numbered 8 in blue pencil.

Mfl. 1422 : The first system contains sketches for bars 284-290. The 2nd system is a sketch based on the theme of Melisande's love for Pelleas and is labeled 'C' in orange pencil. An unidentified sketch beginning at system 4 is labeled 'III' in orange pencil. The last two systems contain sketches for bars 223-224, 348-352, 373-374 ff.

Mfl. 1423 : The sketch is written on 'J.E. & Co. No. 9, 28 linig' paper measuring 34.7 x 26.7 cm. with writing in both pencil and ink. Pencil calculations appear in the left margin. It consists of sketches for bars 208-213 and 303-306 plus other unidentified bars.

Mfl. 1424
: The sketch is written in pencil on paper with 28 printed staves (34.7 x 26.7 cm.). The first two lines contain ten motives from the tone poem. The next 3 systems show 3 differing versions for bars 436-438. Two sections of the page have been cut out.

Mfl. 1426 : The sketch is written in pencil on 'J.E. & Co. No. 3, 24 linig' paper measuring 34.7 x 26.7 cm. Instrumental designations are written in ink in the left margin and crossed out in pencil. The sketches are for music around bar 480 but all are crossed out.

Mfl. 1427 : These pencil sketches appear on the verso of 1426 and are for music around bar 483. They are also crossed out. Only '12/8' is written in ink in the last system.

Mfl. 1427a : Bars 351-355 are written in full score in pencil on this page containing 30 staves measuring 34.7 x 26.7 cm.

Mfl. 1428 : The sketch of bars 461-469 is written on paper containing 11 printed staves and measuring 13.1 x 24.2 cm.

Mfl. 1429 : The sketch of bars 479-480 and 475 are written in pencil on the verso of 1428.

Mfl. 1430
: The sketch of music around bars 160-161 and bars 341-342 are written on paper containing 12 printed staves and measuring 17.6 x 24.3 cm. It is written in pencil.

Mfl. 1431 : The pencil sketch of bars 542-560 is on the verso of 1430. Mfl. 1432 : The pencil sketch of bars 584-600 is written on the bottom half of a sheet of 'J.E. & Co. No. 8, 28 linig' paper measuring 26.7 x 18.5 cm.

Mfl. 1434 : The pencil sketch of bars 604-611 and two previous unused bars are written on the verso of the top half of 1432 and measures 17.1 x 26.7 cm.

Mfl. 1435 : There is a sketch of three versions of bar 432 and other chordal sketches written on this page which is the recto of the top half of 1432.

Mfl. 1436 : The pencil sketch of bars 525-532 is written on a leaf with 12 printed staves measuring 17.3 x 24.5 cm.

Mfl. 1437 : The pencil sketch of bars 567-583 is written on the verso of 1436.

Mfl. 1438 : The pencil sketches consist of music for bars 513-514, 508, 517-523, and another unidentified measure. A two-measure ink sketch of Melisande's motive with its inversion and calculations in pencil are also present. It is written on the bottom half of a leaf of 'J.E. & Co. No. 8, 24 linig' paper measuring 17.3 x 26.7 cm.

Mfl. 1439 : The pencil sketch is written on the verso of 1438 and consists of bars 461-469 and 476-478. Ink corrections appear on the first staff; cross outs and erasures are also present.

Mfl. 1440 : Bars 470-476 are sketched in ink on a leaf with 12 printed staves measuring 17.4 x 26.7 cm. This is followed by a pencil sketch of bars 487-497; the measures are labeled a-e and are marked with an asterisk. An earlier sketch of these measures is also marked with an asterisk but is crossed out on 1427.

Mfl. 1441 : The pencil sketches of bars 494 ff. and bars 500-510 appear on the verso of 1440.
