All the sketches are written in black ink on 'J.E. & Co. No. 12a, 20 linig'
paper (26.7 x 34.7 cm.) unless otherwise noted.
Mfl. 1403 : The first four systems contain the first draft of the
work which corresponds to measures 75 ff. in the final piece. The next
two systems contain pencil sketches of bars 18-26 ff. (Pelleas theme)
and an early version of Golo's theme in Eb major.

1404 : The top of the page contains a programmatic outline of the
work divided into three major sections written in pencil. Musical sketches
resume under this consisting of drafts of bars 18-26, 19-30 ff., 25-31.

1405 : The first system continues the sketch from the 2nd system of
1404 (bars 19-30 ff.). The 2nd system contains bars 44-54 ff. in E major.
The sketch is not used in the final piece.

first sketch is labeled 'IIa' in orange pencil; the second is labeled
'b' also in orange pencil.

and consists of sketches for bars 1-18. Some bars are crossed out and
show erasures.

1408 : The sketch is on the verso of 1407. Systems 1-3 are sketches
for the measures around bar 125. Systems 4 and 5 are sketches for bars
160-182, and systems 6-8 are for bars 133-157.

Pelleas' theme. The 2nd system sketches a harmonized version of Pelleas'
theme followed by another version of Pelleas' theme crossed out by orange
pencil. This is followed by bars 110-116. A sketch of bars 124 ff. is
crossed out followed by a sketch of bars 117-125.

is in ink. The page contains sketches for bars 34-38 ff., 42-43, 54-57,

the sketch is not used in the final piece. It is numbered p. 5 in orange
pencil, and three bars are crossed-out in pencil in the second system.

and consists of bars 422-449 ff. and bars 455-458. Three bars are crossed
out in the first system.

and consists of bars 542-585. The melody does not strictly conform to

in blue pencil refers to p. 3 followed by a sketch of bars 378-383 which
completes the sketches for 1416. The page is numbered 8 in blue pencil.

system is a sketch based on the theme of Melisande's love for Pelleas
and is labeled 'C' in orange pencil. An unidentified sketch beginning
at system 4 is labeled 'III' in orange pencil. The last two systems contain
sketches for bars 223-224, 348-352, 373-374 ff.

measuring 34.7 x 26.7 cm. with writing in both pencil and ink. Pencil
calculations appear in the left margin. It consists of sketches for bars
208-213 and 303-306 plus other unidentified bars.

staves (34.7 x 26.7 cm.). The first two lines contain ten motives from
the tone poem. The next 3 systems show 3 differing versions for bars 436-438.

paper measuring 34.7 x 26.7 cm. Instrumental designations are written

On page 51 there is a five measure overlay. The ms. was originally bound
