The international Symposium “Arnold Schönberg and Greek Composers
– in memoriam Iannis Xenakis” will focus on leading Greek composers
of the 20th Century, with the understanding that they also were decisively
influenced by Arnold Schönberg (composer, teacher and guide of an
entire generation). Their relationship to Schönberg and to the Viennese
School has been neglected for the most part until now, and Schönberg’s
reception in Greece has not yet been the topic for discussion in any scholarly
conference.
In four thematic sections on “Nikos Skalkottas and Arnold Schönberg”
(Skalkottas was Schönberg’s most important Greek pupil), “Dmitri
Mitropoulos and the Schönberg school,” “The Viennese School
and Greece,” as well as “The Creative Schönberg-Reception
by Greek Composers,” a diverse picture of Greek musical life in the
20th Century, as well as Arnold Schönberg’s place within it,
will be presented through a multitude of differing perspectives. The Symposium
is dedicated to the memory of Iannis Xenakis.
