European and American Traditions in Music Theory

Significant, initial music theoretical and music analytical advances, having originated in Europe, namely in Vienna (Schenker, Schönberg, Réti), spread to the Anglo-American realm, and there, enhanced by new theoretical concepts, attained a position of major importance. In Europe these methods and developments were either ignored for decades, or only very gradually integrated, to the point that during the span of the past century, one could speak of two quite distinct "traditions," even though, through the capability of international discourse, especially in the area of Schönberg research, an exchange of ideas had been possible. This conference is an attempt to organize these different approaches, to establish comparisons in order to achieve some degree of integration.
